| How “MUG SHOTS”
came to be,
the ‘nutshell’ version …
In 1995, I had what I like to refer to as my ‘cartooning epiphany’. I decided to start my own small business, put my cartoon images on mugs, and wholesale them to gift stores. Hence, the name “Mug Shots”. I was also creating irreverent and caricatured cards for family and friends, as I have been doing throughout my life. The response was incredible and the encouragement to take it further was inspiring. So, I did. Through experimentation, with my artwork and content, I started to develop my own line. I took samples to a large greeting card company to apply for freelance. I was asked to submit 12 designs. They explained that if one was chosen, |
I would be required to sign a contract turning over all rights to the design to them.
Well, one of my designs was chosen! Hurrah, one would think. As I signed the contract, I considered all my creativity, time and expenses. Now this company is able to sell my design in any way it chose, for however much and long it chose, and I could never use it again. All for $150. ?? I decided then and there that I would take a leap of faith and become my own company. In 1998 I began personally going to gift stores, exhibiting and selling my cards in gift and craft shows with great results. I now distribute my cards across Canada and am having a blast! Thank you to all who encouraged, supported and helped me, especially my son, Zach, whose patience, ideas, immense ancillary work, and great sense of humour, helped to grow “MUG SHOTS”. |
